This time

When so much regret about the past, and that the future that inspires us with fear, how can we truly appreciate the present?

is the kind of thoughts that go through my head when I found my hotel room to a luxury grotesque in the middle of the night after a day spent watching people play cards. I'm in Barcelona, a city where enjoy the present moment should not be a very difficult thing.

Like Barcelona, perhaps out of nostalgia. Part of my family comes from here, and it is not without shame that I mumbled three words of English I know thinking about my ancestors. It was in Barcelona that I covered one of my first tournaments poker, there are already four years ago, when Thomas Fougeron had called me to tell his adventures in Team770. Since then, I returned again and again, without ever managing to get bored. Celebrations taste better in Barcelona than elsewhere, it seems, the potato pancakes and sausage as well. And

me back again once more. For a poker tournament, of course. The trial began Monday. So I have permitted me to arrive Saturday night and enjoy the weekend ... A karaoke bar was the last place I thought I would find, but Madeleine and Alex knew the place, as a former expatriate in Japan is an expert in the discipline. There was nobody at the beginning, and it is before a sparse audience that I tried the Javanese Gainsbourg, with polite applause. Alex, it was shaped, and ignited the audience with a song by Madness, complete with voice and dance steps stenor boisterous ska. This clashed sharply with the songs chosen by local people, as sad ballads in Catalan. Our imitation Everybody Needs Somebody To Love has a carton, I'm not too bad out on the introductory verse of Dan Akroyd, he had to speak at full speed. Later I started, and I wanted to try my hand at a song in English. At this time, the bar was completely filled, and my interpretation of La Camisa Negra was laughing half the room, while another clapped his hands, shaking his head, politely enjoying the effort. At least I tried. We will return.

Sunday is spent at full speed. A city tour with the PokerNews team at the wheel of small yellow two-seater cars that behave like a scooter, the GPS gives you directions aloud and tells you what is interesting to look is very nice but do not be afraid of absolutely ridiculous because you watch all the passers by laughing, and motorists honked their horns angrily as you restart sentences at a red light. Then a restaurant with Team Winamax a detour to the Irish pub on the port, and voila.

after the tournament. European Poker Tour. 5.000 euro entry. Routine. Day 1A, full of people, half jumping from entry. Day 1B, even more people, and half who leave too. Not many French media, they are all in Marrakech. Day 2, and the accelerating pace of eliminations a little more, and the French lost at full speed, Team Winamax is completely cleaned. At midnight, the fact remains that four lights among 112 players, Actually no, I get the official rankings realize that I forgot one. And the next morning, I look at the list again and I forgot one other, so in fact there are six. A bit ashamed, I should be more careful. My head is somewhere else. There ElkY in short stack, Jan Boubli, the winner of the 2005 edition, the Corsican Stéphane Albertini, two players that I do not know, and Gilles, a friendly amateur who has paid a cash tournament after making a big win on Winamax. It can not be invented, and his foolish decision has paid: it is in the money "and could leave very rich in Barcelona.

Today it will fall to 24 players. Tomorrow's final will be established and it will be played Saturday. PokerStars big party planned that night in the box beside it. I am supposed to return to France the next day, but I hesitate to veer Marrakech. Harper has already been there a few days he reached the final table of the tournament Deepstack to 500 € (with our former colleague Roroflush), it could very well look after himself to cover the World Poker Tour event that begins Saturday, but I really want to go give him a hand, just to make a better story. In addition, everyone will be there, I'm not at all a fan of Marrakech but I do not want either to miss the party.

Always one foot in the past, one foot in the future, and that this file at full speed in the middle.

Press review and cronyism (November issue)

Before discussing the final of the Partouche Poker Tour and its aftermath, and attack EPT Barcelona (starting Monday at noon) a quick post to do a little advertising for mates and get back on a few articles and pieces of news lately. I added some links in the right column, here:

Infinite Edge : A new blog launched by my Swedish friend Kim Lund, a brilliant mind who rode his boss for many years in the poker industry. Having recently left his post at Bwin (he had held since the glory days of PokerRoom / Ongame before the takeover by the Austrians, so), Kim is now free to express his forthright thoughts on the environment. His blog is that, while rare, an "insider", which addresses the whole side "business" of gambling online. It discusses liquidity, customer retention, rakeback, business model, this kind of thing for imbitable average player. While this aspect of online poker (which is also addressed by several specialized web sites very interesting, I will come back someday), I was myself a complete stranger until I am engaged by an operator. Since then I have daily discussions with my colleagues fascinating Winamax and other industry players on the ins and outs of the trade, but I rarely does the subject here, for fear of telling bullshit. This kind of blog, I recommend it to everyone, even those of you - the majority of my readers, I suppose - that are "only" customers online gaming sites. After all, it's not every day you can realize how we are viewed across the scenes, backstage, by the people who make the butter on your back, the bastards.

Slowrolled : There already are some links to news sites "poker" on the right hand column of this blog, here's a new leader to colleagues' Slowrolled. They are Swiss, but do not hold it against them, they are very good, and independent. Independent, that means less money that the sites affiliated with online poker sites, but also more imaginative resourcefulness, and true freedom of speech. Soon, we should I discuss in more detail about the poker media, but I would not have as nice things to say, both take time to put the forms.

Alexander J Bradley : There nothing to do with poker, so finally, a little: Alex Bradley officiating in recent months as a freelance cameraman for Poker News. The Anglo-Australian is simply one of the most endearing gus and most interesting I have come across on the circuit this year. A lover of travel and discovery, which took the chance to travel a lot the globe, from South America to Japan through the four corners of Europe. Alex is a true artist, his head buzzing with ideas all the time. I'll let you see her blog, her photos, travel stories, moods.

Anthony Roux - "Sitting Out" : A new me a little - a lot - chagrined, Anthony Roux Winamax leaving the team after three years of loyal service. Tallix having expressed his desire to no longer be tied to a sponsor (because of all the constraints that may be involved), I could see a little less often. Tallix, I hardly knew him when I landed in London in February 2008. And by dint of living under the same roof, to travel together, links have been created, we became very close to spend our vacation together twice (including the famous American road trip in summer 2009 ). Level poker is a guy who, in addition to being an outstanding player (fairly common today, finally), has mainly a mental strength. Never in three years I only saw him get angry after a loss. I never saw him take it out on his entourage after losing a pot of $ 30,000. I always remember that moment at the WSOP 2008, when at the middle of the night Tall had missed a final of a hair after eating a bad-beat to vomit. Ten minutes later we were in the parking lot, and he had already changed the subject. No tears, no wailing, no desire to spend his nerves on someone else. That, gentlemen, this is called having character, and should take much of the seed.

Winamax - Inside the mind of a pro : One of the constant problems when we cover poker tournaments online, is trying to create content that is not immediately perishable. Telling blows that have just occurred, producing a ranked player in the race at time T is cool, but it remains little more than a few interesting hours. My colleagues Regis, Paco and Junior, alongside whom I worked for three years now, have a similar problem when it comes to producing videos. The model "Yeah, uh, I 15.000 carpet, I played a nice shot with AK, I raise UTG ... "Shot in five minutes during the break somewhat experienced. Always so creative, Regis has proposed a very interesting idea: to film the entire tournament from a pro, since the arrival in the city until the last hand, and involve the pro in post production with a voiceover telling him everything that happens in the mind: the joys, sorrows, doubts and all the trimmings . After a first test in Monte Carlo last April, this thirty-minute video tour of Vienna is the first officially published by the trio on Winamax. The product is still not perfect, but I find the results quite interesting and promising. Other episodes will of course be rotated this season. I cross my fingers that the recent scandals of cheating (involving, you probably know, fake undercover reporters during tournaments) do not question the presence of media between poker tables, crucial to carry out such projects.

Peter Eastgate WSOP bracelet sells on Ebay : While Jonathan Duhamel newly crowned world champion of poker in Las Vegas two weeks ago, the 2008 winner Peter Eastgate is to sell the trophy Supreme every poker player, strap on the platform for online auction Ebay. The news comes a few months after qu'Eastage has expressed its intention to move away from the poker world. A decision he has met so far, and I had at the time warmly applauded. Here, as regards the bracelet, Danish explains that the charm was "taking the dust," and that's good because he wants to part with them: all the proceeds will be donated to UNICEF. Obviously, it took Tony G intervene with his customary finesse, history once again to make the pub for cheap, announcing he would try to win the auction to make a bracelet for his dog collar . Idiot!

Vicky Coren - "Let Their Heads Their Hearts rule" : The English player of the team PokerStars Pro publishes a column in which she believes professional poker player that is now a respectable activity for young people, even to argue that the world of professional poker is more stable than other sectors like banking. I have my opinion on the issue, it differs somewhat from that of Miss Coren. What interests me most with this article, these are the reactions it has aroused among readers, readers who are "big government" since the column was published in the respected British daily The Guardian (rather ranked left ). Scroll to the bottom, and read: almost all reactions are negative, if not downright hostile, with a cohort of people taking offense that we can consider poker as a profession like any other. And it is symptomatic when the mainstream press in France (Le Monde, Libération, 20 minutes, etc.), as elsewhere, is interested in poker, the comments section of their site is invaded by such reactions . This inspires me two things. 1 / People who hate poker because it is a game with negative effects on society are probably not wrong. 2 / These include people there still a lot of people (at least here in France). It will poison the good 24 hours out of 24 with advertising in each half of the match, on buses, subways, and poor quality programming by tens, they never change their minds. Again, I have more to say about it, but it deserves separate article.
